Experiential Activity 3

Q EXPERIENTIAL ACTIVITY #3THREE GOOD THINGS (Adopted from Peterson (2006)) Gratitude is known to be a powerful source of psychological, physical, and relational benefits. Perhaps because of this, gratitude interventions have been one of the most robust and effective positive psychology interventions that has been developed. In Seligman et al.’s (2005) study, it has been found that people who engaged in this activity for one week experienced increases in happiness and decreases in symptoms of depression for up to 6 months. INSTRUCTIONS For one week at the end of each day before going to sleep, write down three things that went well during the day. The three things you list can be relatively small (“My roommate washed my dishes”) or large (“My sister just gave birth to a healthy baby”) in importance. Under each of the three things on your list, write down why you think the positive event happened. For example, you might speculate that your roommate washed your dishes because “they are very kind,” or because “I cleared up their dishes last time.” After you have completed this activity for one week, write about your experience in your reflection paper by responding to the questions below. Please attach your journal as an appendix at the end of your paper. 1. Describe your process of identifying three things at the end of every day. Was it easy or difficult? Why? 2. What kind of thoughts and feelings arose as you reflected on what went well each day? Please be specific. 3. What was it like to come up with an explanation for the cause of the positive event you listed? Did it change your feelings of gratitude in anyway? 4. How did this exercise impact your view or experience during the day of the week you engaged in this activity? 5. How would you evaluate this experiential activity? Was it helpful? What did you like about the activity? If you would you like to change something about this activity, what would it be? 6. What have you learned from this experiential activity that you did not know beforehand? The process of identifying each thing at day end is easy because I became much aware of my surroundings and took better care of the positive things happening around me. This is not always big things happening every day; I have learned how to take notice of the small things happened each day. The process has made my sights and awareness stronger because in the past I used to let go of many positive things and did not take proper notice of it. In the journey of recording positive things at the day end, I could summarize what were the good things happened over a week. Someone left their seats for me in the bus while I was traveling.
